Master académique

Our Master in Information and Computer Sciences (MICS) focuses on problem-driven understanding of the foundations of computer science. Our students will acquire the necessary know-how for PhD studies or a high-level position in the public or private sector and will be encouraged to acquire life-long learning skills like abstraction, cross thinking, and independence. We teach students from many different countries, and we have national and international cooperation agreements with universities across Europe, US, and China, and industries in banking and other fields.

The MICS programme is mainly taught by the faculty members of the Computer Science and Communications Research Unit of the University of Luxembourg. International experts have joined the team in the past, as well as colleagues from other research units. Our primary mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research in the area of computer science, communication and information sciences and to push forward the scientific frontiers of these fields.

Who are we ?

We are an internationally diverse group of professors, researchers and lecturers with the common goal of establishing world-class research and teaching programmes in Computer and Information Sciences
at the University of Luxembourg.

What about semester fees ?

Each student has to pay each semester a registration fee of 200 €.

How is the MICS programme organised ?

The proposed programme is taught as a full-time programme over two years with 60 ECTS per year. The first three semesters are taken up with course work and semester 4 is devoted to writing a master thesis. The first semester is an orientation semester with a set of common courses for all students that  stablish a firm foundation. The second semester offers courses that prepare for further specialisation in the third semester. The programme culminates in a master thesis in the fourth semester.

The main innovation of the MICS programme is the introduction of profiles. The notion of profile comes out of the realisation that certain sets of courses make a coherent whole with a specific set of learning outcomes. Profiles provide a more flexible mechanism than traditional specialisation tracks: students can defer the decision of which profiles to realise to the third semester and they may pursue multiple profiles.

Note that the set of profiles is not static. Indeed additional profiles may be introduced to accommodate student, professor or industry needs. The following profiles are currently being offered:

  • Adaptive Computing
  • Communication Systems
  • Information Security
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Network Systems
  • Reliable Software Systems

For a detailed description of each profile please consult the MICS web site.

Target group

We are looking for students with a Bachelor or equivalent Diploma degree in computer science or related field, with good mathematical knowledge, and with the motivation to study in a research-oriented field. The MICS is completely taught in English.

Career opportunities

Luxembourg is a major financial centre with ever increasing needs of highly qualified IT staff. Other employment opportunities are found in the public sector, local industries and public research institutes. Furthermore the MICS prepares students for a PhD in computer science.

Why study in Luxembourg?

Here are ten reasons for choosing the MICS programme:

  • Flexible specialisation options
profiles are a unique feature of our programme that empowers students by allowing them to choose multiple specialisations and to perform interdisciplinary studies
  • Individual supervision and small class sizes
we limit the student intake in order to provide an optimal learning environment; active participation of students during lectures is encouraged
  • Early involvement in research projects
students have the possibility, via student job positions, to participate early on in scientific research projects thus giving them a better idea of what research is all about
  • Ties to industry
the master thesis can be done in the context of a company; this option is especially interesting for those students that do not plan to go for a PhD
  • Strong research unit
our master programme is taught by staff from the Computer Science and Communications Research Unit, the largest research unit at the University of Luxembourg and also the one with the highest scientific output. In the last few years the CSC has pursued a strategy of hiring top professors from around the world
  • International and multi-cultural environment
both students and faculty come from many different cultural backgrounds, which makes studying computer science in Luxembourg so much more exciting
  • Working in Luxembourg
  • Luxembourg is politically stable, enjoys a low unemployment rate and offers attractive salaries
  • Quality of life in Luxembourg
in a recent survey Luxembourg was ranked the safest city among 215 capitals and 17th in terms of quality of living
  • At the heart of Europe
Luxembourg is a short train ride away from cities such as Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt
    Low cost
  • there is only a 200 € fee per semester for registering for the master programme
